January 4th 1847: Colt sells revolvers to government

On this day in 1847, the American gun maker Samuel Colt sold his first revolver pistol to the US Government. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Colt is famous as the man who popularised the revolver. Colt’s company rose to prominence after January 4th 1847, when he sold 1000 revolvers to Captain Samuel Walker of the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War. He went on to supply arms to both sides of the American Civil War. His guns became popular on the frontier, and Colt sold many to those traveling West. Colt died in January 1862.
